If it’s for work in a business-casual setting, then style and the right weight are important. No matter the activity, though, every hoodie has to be comfortable, at a minimum.

Hoodies come in a variety of materials. “Nothing beats French terry,” says fashion expert Cindy Conroy. “The brushed fabric makes for an exceptionally soft hoodie that delivers on comfort, wash after wash.” French terry is a cotton knit with loops on the inside and a smooth surface; it’s breathable and versatile.

If you’re planning on being more active in your hoodie—working out and whatnot—then you’ll want at least a hint of polyester for its stretch and moisture-wicking potential. “Man-made fabrics like polyester add durability and a moisture-wicking element to the garment,” says Abrams.

You have two choices when shopping for a hoodie: with or without a zip? It really comes down to personal preference, but generally speaking, a zipped hoodie is more casual and laidback while a pullover hoodie is more formal and fashion-forward. “A pullover hoodie [without] prominent logos or pockets is polished,” finds Abrams, adding that hoodies without drawstrings also have an elevated look.
